This is wild - somebody did a deep dive into the real stories behind this famous XKCD:

@leyrer too true. twenty years ago I wrote a shitty script to import google calendar into orage.
I'm not proud of the code, it was a bodge to fix a problem I had at the time.
There are better solutions out there.
Twenty years on people still mail me asking about updates or enhancements ...
@leyrer if you have issues with this style of article page design (as I did) there is a button at the top of the page to make it at least present in a single page without animations ...
@leyrer called it. time zone database.
@leyrer Yes, though that's kinda normal. Writing computer programs kinda is a breadless activity, unless you are doing highly-trivial and mind-numbing stuff at a company.
Also one thing we should always keep in mind is that software does not "rot" by itself. There's plenty of code which is 'done' and doesn't need to be changed anymore.
It is awesome!
I notice that from that list Inkscape has several precarious upstreams. libxml2, libjpeg-turbo, harfbux, freetype and zlib. (I can add Glycin, gtkmm, pango, and loads more)
Part of what annoys me about the struggle to get Inkscape funded is that we're in no place to fund our upstream properly until we do.
@leyrer
"Your phone's time zone, as the file has it today
Europe/Berlin 1:00 EU CE%sT"
... ah encoding 🥺
@leyrer this is such a phantastic collection of information and it shows that we need to change how we finance FOSS. (a) the people need to be paid for their service. (b) we need credible backup maintainers.
I knew about Daniel and curl (because he posted this himself earlier) - but what I had forgotten about was the timezone txt file.
Last time I had to worry about that file was adjusting the time zone support on a cluster of Solaris machines I administered in the 00s.
And when changing the scale factor, it jumps to random spots. Really unbearable.
@nik @j_bertolotti why are you pestering my tl with that commentary? If you have feedback, contact the author, not me.
@nik @leyrer There ist a version without the scroll-behavior available here: https://sheets.works/data-viz/holding-up-the-internet/read
@nik @leyrer just check the very first link: https://sheets.works/data-viz/holding-up-the-internet/read
@leyrer I love this stuff. This one made me so happy. Click the blocks.
